Southern Comfort

Last weekend, Dancenow|NYC hosted performances of "Southern Comfort" on Friday and Saturday night, at Joe's Pub in downtown New York. The program consisted of dances set to country music, including Johnny Cash (those classic live concerts at Folsom and San Quentin prisons), Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline. Here's some background info:

The number featuring Dolly's music was titled "Boob." It was choreographed by John Heginbotham and Maile Okamura, and performed by Jeremy Laverdure and Meghan Merrill. Jeremy and Meghan appeared on stage with gigantic boob props (I'm talking two feet in diameter) strapped onto their chests. They moved together, separated, jumped up and down, rubbed each other, and finally finished posing side-by-side, making a "perfect rack." It may sound crude, but if you look at the chrome "naked chick mud flaps" featured on the cover art of the Backwoods Barbie CD, you'll realize that Dolly would thoroughly approve!

The music was a mix tape edited by Jim Abdou. I did not recognize, or can't recall, the songs. But I was helplessly stoned, laughing like a demented maniac, so it may have gone right past me.

DanceMopolitan is killer, killer talented. You would be insane not to attend their June 6-7 performances, titled "Show Down" and based on western musicals. Meanwhile, I am egging them on to do a bluegrass show, featuring -- you guessed it -- sound tracks by the inimitable Dolly Parton! Rock on, Dolly. Rock Tennessee, and rock New York.
